Ballydrehid N.S. gets First Green Flag

We have worked hard to get our Green Schools Flag for Litter and Waste. In September, we gathered our Green Schools Committee with children from Senior Infants to Sixth Class. We first started to reduce litter in the bins. Then we started encouraging children to recycle in a fun way by making games. In October, we visited the Recycling Centre in Cashel, we learned how some waste is recycled and how other waste is sent to the landfill in trucks. In November, we had our Green Schools Day. We worked in teams to make robots from recycled materials. We also played games where we sorted rubbish into the correct bins against the clock. Some children even dressed up for the occasion.

In March of this year, we received a letter from An Taisce informing us that we had achieved our first Green Flag. We were so excited when we heard the news!

On May 24th, some members of the green schools committee went to the Hotel Kilkenny, where we were awarded our green schools flag at the annual awards ceremony. Annalise, one of our green schools member went up to get the flag for litter and waste. Other schools went up on stage to dance or sing. After the ceremony ended, we had our lunch before returning to school on the bus. When we arrived back to school, we showed everybody the Green Flag and told them about our day.
